The UPS Foundation STEM Kit Volunteer Event

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta recently participated in a one-of-a-kind volunteer service project with The UPS Foundation to create 100 STEM kit boxes for our contactless October trick or treat drive-thru event. The boxes included three different activities that will allow children in our program to participate in fun, hands-on projects related to science and math with their mentors.

Carol B. Tomé, Chief Executive Officer of UPS, gave opening remarks with her husband Ramon. She is the 12th CEO in the 113-year history of the company. Before joining UPS, Carol served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of The Home Depot, Inc., one of the world’s largest retailers.

Kwame Johnson, BBBSMA CEO & President, greeted the UPS Executive Leadership Team and spouses. “We are honored to be present with The UPS Foundation for such a momentous occasion. Our partnership has expanded over two decades and your impact in the community is well known.” He also spoke about our mission to professionally support mentoring matches that inspire and ignite the power and promise of youth.

Gerard Gibbons, UPS President, US Sales and a BBBSMA Board Member, invited the audience to lean in to our mission. Our 2019 Big Sister of the Year, Blake Washington, a chemical engineer, also spoke about the importance of exposing Littles to careers in STEM.

This was also the first corporate volunteer event for incoming UPS Foundation President Nicole Clifton. In September, UPS appointed Ms. Clifton as President of Social Impact and The UPS Foundation, effective November 1, following the retirement of Eduardo Martinez. She will lead UPS’s global philanthropy, social impact and community engagement efforts as part of UPS’s new Corporate Affairs, Communications and Sustainability team.

Eduardo Martinez, President of The UPS Foundation and UPS Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer, closed out the event and thanked everyone for their commitment to community. Mr. Martinez is retiring after a distinguished 44-year career with UPS most recently leading the operations and management of UPS’s global philanthropic, employee engagement and corporate relations programs for the past eight years.
