UPDATE: Navigating Challenging Waters

On Saturday July 23, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta held the open forum event “Navigating Challenging Waters” - a safe space for our Bigs, Littles, parents and staff to gather and talk about their feelings regarding recent events.

More than 70 people showed up to listen, share and move a little closer to finding a solution to the critical issues at hand.

The event was facilitated by Kathryn Stanley who is a middle school educator with a background justice conflict transformation and peace-building. She moderated a panel of five people to talk about different perspectives that addressed everyone’s fears, concerns and hopes.

The panel consisted of Officer Kennedy and Sergeant Hall from the Atlanta Police Department, Dr. Susan Byers, Child, Adolescent and Family Therapist, her son Dylan Byers who is a former Little now attending college, and Asia Parks who attends John Marshall Law School and is involved with organizations working against systemic racial injustice.

The event touched upon many issues and gave some very good input as to how BBBSMA can step forward as a resource and support for our Littles, Bigs and families.
