Connecting Police and Youth Through Mentoring

Today Big Brothers Big Sisters of America launches the Bigs in Blue initiative - a mentoring program that connects police with youth in communities throughout the nation to build strong and trusting one-to-one mentoring relationships.

The NBC’s Today Show featured a segment about Big Brother in Blue Ryan and his Little Brother Robert who have formed a truly brotherly bond during their two years of being matched. The videos also features Pam Iorio, the National President of Big Brothers Big Sisters, who talks about the importance and impact of a one-to-one mentoring relationship.

Several Big Brothers Big Sisters chapters throughout the country already have something similar to Bigs in Blue, and this initiative hopes to take it nationwide.

At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta we are also working closely together with local law enforcement agencies to strengthen the relationship between police and youth. We have hosted two open forum events at our Peachtree Street location where Bigs, Littles and their families had an opportunity to voice their concerns and fears and engage in an open and honest dialogue with members from the city police force. We are also working with the Gwinnett County and Atlanta Police Departments.
