Mentoring Towards College

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta (BBBS) and the Fulton County, Cobb County, and Atlanta City Public Schools have joined forces to implement a school-based, year-round mentoring program to provide adult friendship, academic encouragement, guidance, and social development for students in grades 4 through 8 (MAP: Mentoring Academic Partnerships) and in grades 9 through sophomore in college (CAT: College Academic Track). Scholarships are available through American Intercontinental University (AIU).  Our program, Mentoring Towards College, has 5 program goals:

BBBS school-based programs usually begin with guidance counselors identifying and referring students who could most benefit from the presence of a caring adult in their lives. Upon being matched the volunteer (mentor) and student (mentee) meet 4 hours per month.

Our mentors utilize a developmental approach, The Lerner’s “Five C’s,” which promotes development of the following skills:

Examples of Mentor Activities: Mentor pairs will engage in a variety of activities, such as playing computer games and sports, building models, discussing favorite hobbies, reading together, sharing life experiences, and attending school events. While our mentors will supplement planned activities with academic components such as tutoring and homework, the primary focus will be on building solid, caring, supportive relationships.

Pro-Social Bonding: To enhance pro-social bonding with the persons and institutions around them, students will be encouraged to take part in at least one community service project per year. Benefits of community service participation include: higher academic test scores, particularly in core subjects such as reading/language arts, writing, and social studies; increased self-efficacy, self-confidence, self-management, and responsible decision making; and avoidance of risk behaviors.

Job Shadowing: When students visit worksites via job shadowing, they learn first-hand what specific jobs entail (Lozada, 2001). BBBS program staff will work closely with our many corporate partners to provide mentees with career education opportunities including job shadowing; thereby increase key career readiness skills such as communication and social skills including self-confidence.
